In Iranian culture, the home has always been more than a shelter; it is a place for living, reflection, and togetherness. Rooted in climate and culture, traditional houses created peaceful inward-looking spaces connected to nature.
Located within the dense fabric of Dezful at the end of a narrow alley, the site is surrounded by neighboring buildings with limited visibility. Although the client initially planned a multi-story apartment for investment and security purposes, we encouraged them to reconsider the site’s unique potential and build a single-family home instead.
Inspired by traditional Iranian architecture, the project reinterprets the concept of the central courtyard in a contemporary way. Behind its modest exterior, the house gradually reveals a bright circular courtyard at its center, around which all spaces are organized. The courtyard becomes the heart of the home, blurring the boundary between inside and outside.
Circular ceilings frame the sky and cast changing curved shadows across the interiors, emphasizing the passage of time while also increasing shade in the semi-open spaces suited to Dezful’s hot climate. Verandas surrounding the courtyard act as flexible in-between spaces where everyday life unfolds. Natural airflow, cooled by the greenery and water of the courtyard, passes through these shaded areas and ventilates the interior, improving comfort in the hot semi-arid environment.
